Social network users in Egypt are demanding unlimited internet quota with more than 1 million hashtags

 


Social media platforms in Egypt witnessed a campaign against limited quota packages imposed by ISPs, and many flocked to trend the campaign's two hashtags. So far, #Unlimited_internet_in_Egypt and its Arabic version #انترنت_غير_محدود_في_مصر have been mentioned in 263,000 tweets and over a million tweets respectively,

with both hashtags trending since July 3rd. The campaign has become an outlet for many who are frustrated. with the quality of services they receive and the fact that Egypt is one of the few countries in the world with limited internet. Another user claimed that Egyptians pay twice as much for a gigabyte as any other country, complaining that even then the Internet is limited and suffers from frequent drops in speed.Although monthly internet packages in Egypt have different internet speed limits depending on the capacity of users' landline connections, some providers have limited internet quotas that continue to work when consumed, albeit at a limited speed. In the event that a subscriber needs to upgrade back to their original speed, they will need to repurchase their monthly plan or use an additional fee. One social media user even went so far as to say that these packs don't take into account the evolution of internet culture

especially after the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the world into a digital culture that's reigning in many areas. Egypt has seen a remarkable increase in the number of internet users since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. As of January 2022, Egypt had around 76.9 million internet users, up from 50.4 million in January 2021, of which 63 million used mobile data, 10.9 million ADSL users and 2.2 million USM modem users, according to a report released in March 2022 by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. In Egypt alone, the number of mobile data users has increased by 13.6 million users in one year, up from an estimated 50.4 million in January 2021. The campaign has also seen the contribution of several public figures such as renowned Egyptian actor Mohamed Saad, who used comics to express his support for the hashtag, who make fun of the speed of the internet. In addition, prominent Egyptian actor Mohamed Henedy also joined the campaign, saying, "Unlimited internet has become a necessity in the coming era." it depends on the internet… journalism has turned into video journalism… and we have thousands of actors in one of the most important industries in the world that the Ministry of Youth and Sport now supports,” added Henedy.Egypt has invested around EGP 60 billion in expanding its communications infrastructure as part of its plan to pave the way for Egypt's digitization.

The country is currently ranked 83rd in the world for global fixed internet speed according to the Speedtest Global Index, up from a previous 86th in February 2022. The Speedtest Global Index is the ranking system used by Ookla, a world leader in internet -Test data created and analysis comparing internet speed data from users around the world on a monthly basis.
